Malaysian VPN provider BolehVPN gets a lot publicity for being the most secure VPN provider in the industry. While they do offer a number of excellent advanced security features, their privacy policy clearly states they will log whenever they decide their network is abused, even though BolehVPN doesn’t clearly define what constitutes abuse. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this policy, we wanted to highlight it since a lot of major online resources skip this fact and claim that BolehVPN is a no logs company. Please refer to the Most Secure VPN providers article for a list of no logs VPN providers.

Now let’s first consider the great features that BolehVPN has to offer and come back to their stance on logging later in this review.

BolehVPN has about 30 servers in 14 countries that are completely independent from the central customer database and do not communicate with each other which adds extra user protection. Their servers are also configured to generate new keys on an hourly basis, the feature known as Perfect Forward Secrecy.

BolehVPN desktop software has DNS Leak Protection feature and allows binding to a VPN IP address during torrent downloads to ensure no data leaks when VPN connection is dropped. Additionally, their software supports “Tor over VPN” and “VPN over Tor”, which means that BolehVPN users can first connect to Tor network and only then to VPN servers, or first connect to VPN servers and only then to Tor network. The only other VPN provider that offers both “Tor over VPN” and “VPN over Tor” is AirVPN.

BolehVPN is also an excellent provider for those who live in China, Iran or Syria. Their xCloak service scrambles OpenVPN packets making them hard to identify which makes OpenVPN invisible to even the most advanced firewalls like the Great Firewall of China. Additionally, they have servers that support TCP port-forwarding – handy in bypassing corporate firewalls and college Wi-Fi networks that block specific ports.

BolehVPN SOCKS5 proxy can be installed on bittorrent applications (Vuze, uTorrent, qbittorrent) and Tor. BolehVPN offers HTTP proxy (insecure) for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Opera. Additionally, Seedbox hosting and Game hosting are available.

BolehGeo is a Smart DNS service that while offers no security, re-routes DNS related data to trick streaming websites into thinking you’re located in the US. Because all data is not encrypted, BolehGeo has virtually no performance hit, hence, is a great tool to access geo-restricted content. BolehGeo supports the following channels: Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, Pandora, Fox, Crunchyroll, CBS, YouTube. More can be added per request.

  • VPN server locations (256-bit enryption): Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, UK
  • “Streaming” server locations (128-bit encryption): United States, United Kingdom, Malaysia, Italy, Japan. Cannot be used for p2p
  • xCloak server locations: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United States, United Kingdom.
  • TCP server locations: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Hong Kong, Italy, Sweden, United States.
  • SOCKS5 server locations: Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland

In conclusion, BolehVPN is most certainly an excellent VPN provider with a heavy focus on advanced security that will protect their users from mass surveillance and various online threats, but let’s consider their privacy policy

BolehVPN Privacy Policy

along with information on prohibited activities in BolehVPN FAQ

BolehVPN Privacy Policy

While it makes perfect sense to fight activities BolehVPN team condemns, it’s important to understand they reserve the right to log whenever they see fit and they will cooperate with authorities on matters they do not tolerate themselves. For this reason BolehVPN is not that much different from VPN providers that keep connection logs (HideMyAss, for instance) with an important difference being their attitude towards torrenting.

As far as their refund policy goes: “Packages of 30 days and above are refundable within the first 14 days of your subscription PROVIDED that our support staff has been given ample opportunity to resolve your issue or point of dissatisfaction and they have determined it’s a genuine refund request. Refunds not due to technical issues will not be entertained.” Essentially, this means that BolehVPN doesn’t have money back guarantee in a classical sense of this term. BolehVPN users are forced to go through extensive troubleshooting procedure before they can get a refund. Meaning that those who experienced issues and decided they don’t feel like spending time fixing their connection or for some reason are not satisfied with BolehVPN service, are obviously out of luck for a refund.
