Best VPN for iPhone & iPad

Note: You may want to refer to the Best OpenVPN app for iOS for additional information.

VyprVPN Winter Deal 2017 There is a number of providers who support VPN on mobile devices and even released their custom apps. Even though this is great, not all apps were created even. While Android have always had easy OpenVPN setup, iOS didn’t allow VPN apps to access network settings. Once OpenVPN Connect app was installed, the user had to go to the main VPN Settings, manually connect to VPN and then choose the server. Essentially, the main function of the app was to deliver the server profiles to the iPhone. Which means that the app is close to useless and very inconvenient to use. Even server switching from the application interface is not possible with OpenVPN.

Additionally, OpenVPN is not reliable on an iPhone as it frequently disconnects by itself (when idle) and heavily impacts battery life. Fortunately, Apple realised this issue and introduced official documentation for IPsec/IKEv2 setup with with its iOS 8 release. Most leading VPN providers have now released custom VPN apps that support only this protocol because it’s so much more efficient and offers excellent performance on mobile devices with no sacrifice in terms of security. If you prefer using OpenVPN instead of IPsec, all the VPN providers that we listed below allow manual OpenVPN setup with open-source OpenVPN Connect app.

But IPsec/IKEv2 is a very secure alternative to OpenVPN, actually even more secure if you consider that, unlike OpenVPN, it is not based on OpenSSL – a technology that is constantly suffering from various hacks due to a number of vulnerabilities. So while OpenVPN itself is a great technology, OpenSSL is not. IPsec, on the other hand, is the main protocol used in a corporate environment that large companies trust enough to protect highly sensitive business related information from being intercepted by competing parties.

Additionally, IPsec/IKEv2 provides a much better functionally for iPhone users comparing to OpenVPN and finally allows connecting to/disconnecting from secure tunnels and server switching right from the app interface.

ZenMate supports IPsec/IKEv2 on iOS 8, iOS 9 and iOS 10. ZenMate apps are very efficient in their performance and have minimalistic interface. Unfortunately, iOS 7 users will have to either use OpenVPN configuration or fill out individual server information for PPTP and L2TP protocols. However, considering there are only 2% of users who are still running iOS 7, ZenMate is an excellent choice for 98% of iPhone users.

Hide.Me is another VPN provider to support IPsec/IKEv2 on iOS 8, iOS 9 and iOS 10. iOS 7 users will have to manually setup VPN profiles.

ExpressVPN uses Cisco IPsec protocol and has a very clean UX that makes their app convenient to use on iOS 8, iOS 9 and iOS 10. Once VPN software were downloaded and installed on an iPhone, the app allows connecting to and disconnecting from VPN as well as server switching right from the app interface.

VyprVPN is another VPN to support IPsec on iOS 8+.

IPVanish supports IPsec/IKEv2 on iOS 8+.

PureVPN app supports IPsec/IKEv2 on iOS 8+.

TunnelBear is the only provider that not only supports IPsec/IKEv2 on iOS 8, iOS 9, iOS 10, and also somehow managed to figure out how to implement it on iOS 7 without official Apple documentation. Hence, TunnelBear is the only VPN provider that can deliver excellent interface and convenient VPN for all versions of iOS.

StrongVPN iPhone app supports IPsec on iOS 8+ and offers server switching right from the app interface as well. It’s necessary to first download and install VPN profiles before being able to switch between servers right from the app.

Hi, I am looking for an iOS 9.3.3 compatible VPN that will automatically (or with automated reminder) start, based on network name, configurable by me, such that whenever networks like “insecurepublic1” or “Optimumwifi” are connected, the VPN starts up, connects and protects my wireless connection, but otherwise, for instance when my secure home or work networks are connected, shuts down and stays out of the way. I am willing to pay around $10 per month for this. I currently use Surf Easy free, and like it, but they do not support such config.
I am frequently on public WIFI, doing little more than surfing and email so mostly just want to protect WIFI—don’t need to spoof from Istanbul, stream netflix or anything else very complicated.
    Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thank you.

There is no VPN provider that supports what you have described. You need to either have it “on” all the time, or manually turn it on/off when you’re on a specific network. Actually, iPhone itself does not support this feature, even if there was a VPN provider willing to implement it in their software. Up until recently iPhone didn’t even allow connecting to VPN and server switching from the app interface, you had to do it from the main Settings.

Does any VPN provider offer a kill switch for iOS 9.3.3. ( iPhone6s or iPad)? It seems like the kill switch feature only works with computers (Windows, Mac) but not iOS.

      2. CRYPTMODEAugust 15, 2016

Correct, kill switch is not available on mobile devices.
