Even though Astrill claims they are a no logs VPN provider, some evidence suggests that the company might keep extensive logs, including complete browsing history, and consequently terminates accounts that abuse their network. Additionally, Astrill requires a working phone number upon registration that will be used for verification purposes. Astrill claims they need it to avoid abuse since they don’t require payment details for their 7 day trial. While there is no way to verify this without undercover person within the company, this requirement further supports allegations that diminish the credibility of the company’s claims regarding logging.

If you are concerned with your privacy, we recommend choosing a provider from our Best No Logs VPN guide.

Astrill is also a VPN provider with a large presence in countries like China and the Middle East since they offer StealthVPN protocol that can bypass government Deep Packet Inspection. However, Astrill users report to experience disconnection issues on a regular basis which is why we recommend alternative VPN providers: Best VPN for China and Best VPN for Middle East.

Besides supporting mainstream devices such as Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Android, Astrill also supports smartphones that are generally not available with other VPN providers: Windows Phone and BlackBerry. Their custom apps have a number of features: Ad Blocking, Port Forwarding, Application Filter (split tunneling only selected applications through VPN connection), Video Accelerator that improves streaming speed when watching Netflix, Hulu and similar.

Additionally, Astrill offers a number of add-ons: Home Plan (up to 5 simultaneous devices), VPN sharing, Dedicated IP, CryptoPlus algorithm (512-bit encryption).

To conclude, Astrill is a provider that is able to meet the needs of those residing in Islamic States and China as they mask OpenVPN that can bypass internet censorship there. Users who don’t mind providing an active phone number that essentially ties them to a specific country, will also enjoy a number of features that Astrill has to offer.

I’ve been using Astrill for years, and I am fine with them. When all the VPN’s were blocked few years ago, only Astrill found the solution. So at least they are doing something to try to make it work here in China.
